Identification

25cm (9¾ in)

  • Bright, orange-red belly
  • Dark streaks on the white throat
  • Narrow yellow eye ring

Distribution

South America: found in Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • T. r. juensis:
  • North-eastern Brazil (Piauí and Ceará to Pernambuco and western Bahia)
  • T. r. rufiventris:

Habitat

Woodland areas, urban gardens, parks, backyards and forest edges.

Behaviour

Diet

Includes insects, spiders and fruit (oranges, papayas and coconuts).

Breeding

The female builds a cup-shaped nest made from grass, leaves and moss and incubates 2-6 light-coloured, spotted eggs.
