- Crypturellus undulatus
Identification
28–32 cm (11-12½ in)
- Greyish-brown above, in some races tinged cinnamon on the back and greyer on rump.
- Upperparts and crissum finely vermiculated black, but this very faint (barely visible) in some races.
- Chin white, throat greyish spotted with white, remainder of underparts olive-grey finely vermiculated with black on flanks and undertail.
- Bill black, legs greyish or yellowish green.
Distribution
Eastern and southern Colombia, southern Venezuela and south west Guyana, east Ecuador to Amazonian Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and the far north of Argentina.
Resident.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 6 subspecies[1]:
- C.u. manapiare occurs in southern Venezuela (upper Río Ventuari in Amazonas)
- C.u. simplex in south-western Guyana and immediately adjacent Brazil
- C.u. adspersus in north Brazil south of the Amazon (Rio Madeira to Rio Tapajós)
- C.u. yapura from eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru to north-western Brazil
- C.u. vermiculatus in eastern Brazil (southern Maranhão to Mato Grosso)
- C.u. undulatus from south-eastern Peru, eastern Bolivia to Paraguay, Brazil (Mato Grosso) and northern Argentina.
Habitat
Forest, scrub, woodland and savanna in the tropical zone.
Behaviour
Shy and secretive but can be seen as it freezes when alarmed.
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of small fruits, seeds and insects such as bugs, beetles and their larvae.
Breeding
Their clutch contains 4-5 pinkish eggs, which are incubated for about 17 days.
Vocaliations
Voice: A melancholy three-four note whistle, uttered most often at dawn and dusk.
