Identification

30 cm

  • Tan lower throat with black spots
  • Green legs (but colour does vary)

Distribution

Asia: found only in China
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand

Taxonomy

There are 5-7 subspecies[1]:

  • A. c. chloropus: Scaly-breasted Partridge
  • A. c. peninsularis:
  • South-western Thailand
  • A. c. tonkinensis:
  • A. c. olivacea:
  • A. c. cognacqi:
  • A. c. merlini
  • Endemic to interior central Vietnam)
  • A. c. vivida
  • Coastal hills of central Vietnam

The last two subspecies is often considered a separate, full species: Vietnam Partridge, Arborophila merlini.

Habitat

Evergreen forest, forest edges at heights up to 1400 m.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of seeds, berries and termites.
