Identification

27 cm. Ochre and brown striated head and neck, darker crown, pale tawny throat, chest, flanks, back and wing coverts dark tone on centre followed by ochre and dark brown fringes, and a white terminal fringe, white abdomen and under tail coverts, blackish wings, horn bill, grey leg.

Distribution

South Chile, Argentina, Falkland Islands, and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Taxonomy

Monotypic.

Habitat

Steppe environments, high and solitary plains with peat-bogs and grass mixed with zones without vegetation, seeking protection and shelter of the strong winds between the rocks or small shrubs.

Behaviour

The diet includes seeds and fruits, especially crowberries.

4 eggs are laid.
