Identification
A bulky, large-headed white-and-brown shrike.
Similar species
In the southern end of its range it is unmistakable, in north compare with White-rumped Shrike
Distribution
Much of Africa south of Equator, in Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies are recognized in this species: anguitimens and niveus.
Closely related to White-rumped Shrike also known as Northern White-crowned Shrike
Habitat
Dry forests and dry savanna.
Behaviour
They prefer to perch conspicuously on taller trees that are adjacent to bare ground. They watch for invertebrates, which they take off trunks or hunt on the ground, before returning to a sentinel perch.
Vocalisation
Among their many calls, the most characteristic a distinctive, shrill plover-like “kleeew-keeuw.”
