Distribution
Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia.
Taxonomy
Formerly placed in the genus Geotrygon
Subspecies
Four subspecies are recognized[1].
- Z. f. bourcieri - Andes of Colombia and Ecuador (except for southwest); population in Peru north of the Marañón Valley presumbably also this subspecies
- Z. f. subgrisea - southwestern Ecuador (Loja) and northwestern Peru (south to Lambayeque and northwestern Cajamarca)
- Z. f. frenata - Andes of northern Peru to central Bolivia
- Z. f. margaritae - Andes of southern Bolivia to northwest Argentina
Habitat
Moist montane forests.
