- Shiny black upperparts
- Grey underparts
- White tail edges, rump, moustachial stripes and wing bars
- Strong dark beak
- Long wings
Female: similar, but brown above
Distribution
Asia: China, Tibet, Nepal, India, Eastern and Western Himalayas, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Burma, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Malay Peninsula, Brunei, Borneo, Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Sumatra

Habitat
Broadleaved forest, forest edges and scrub in hilly country.
Behaviour
Breeding
Two or three spotted green eggs are laid in a cup-shaped nest and incubated by the female.
Diet
The diet consists of insects such as butterflies, beetles and winged ants.
