Identification

51-58cm. Black upperparts, black spotted breast, barred below, thick white band on uppertail and undertail, prominent crest. Juvenile - dark brown upperparts, light brown head and underparts.

Distribution

Myanmar through the Malay Peninsula to Borneo and Sumatra.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
New studies place this species in the genus Nisaetus.

Habitat

Open woodland up to 1980 m.

Behaviour

It builds a stick nest in a tree; 1 egg is laid.
