Identification

31cm. Upperparts and breast mottled black, chestnut, and cream, black spotted flanks, rufous face and throat, grey above eye and down to neck. Male larger.

Distribution

S. and central China and Taiwan

Taxonomy

Subspecies

  • B. t. thoracica found in China
  • B. t. sonorivox found in Taiwan

Habitat

Warm forests and grasslands; not entirely dependent on bamboo.

Behaviour

Terrestrial.

7-9 eggs are laid and are incubated by the female for 18 days.

The diet includes invertebrates, nuts, seeds, shoots and leaves.

Vocalisation

Call: ki-ko-kuai or kojukkei
