Geositta cunicularia

Identification

14-16 cm

  • Brown upperparts
  • Pale underparts
  • Streaked breast
  • Pale stripe over eye
  • Dark edged ear-coverts
  • Pale rufous wing bar
  • Dark tail with buff outer feathers
  • Long, slightly downcurved bill

Distribution

South America: found in Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 9 subspecies[1]:

  • G. c. juninensis: Highlands of Peru (Junín and Huancavelica)
  • G. c. titicacae: High plateau of southern Peru to extreme northern Chile and north-western Argentina
  • G. c. frobeni: Arid Andes of southern Peru (Arequipa and Tacna)
  • G. c. georgei: Lomas of coastal southern Peru
  • G. c. deserticolor: Arid littoral of south-western Peru (Arequipa) to northern Chile (Atacama)
  • G. c. fissirostris: Central Chile (southern Atacama to Llanquihué)
  • G. c. contrerasi: West-central Argentina (Sierra Grandes in Córdoba)
  • G. c. hellmayri: Western Argentina
  • G. c. cunicularia: Extreme southern Brazil to Uruguay, Argentina and Tierra del Fuego

Habitat

Fields, sandy areas, flattish, open habitats.

Behaviour

The nest is a chamber at the end of a tunnel built into a sand dune or earthy bank. The clutch consists of 2-3 white eggs.
