Identification
28–30 cm (11-11¾ in)
- Black body
- Cream yellow back
- Darker tail and wingtips
- Males have dark eyerings and black and white spot over ear-coverts
- Large raised red crest
Distribution
South America: found in dry woodlands of north-central Bolivia through Paraguay to northern Argentina, Uruguay and south-eastern Brazil.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Subspecies C. l. major is generally considered invalid[2].
Habitat
Humid to dry Sierran Chocó forest observed at heights around 918-1,250 m. Also in savanna, pastures with copses and groves.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet consists mostly of beetle larva, foraged from tall trees and fallen logs.
Breeding
They excavate a nest hole about 6-8 m up a tree or palm.
