Identification
Taxonomy and Distribution
This species has 5 subspecies which together occupy parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. These subspecies fall into two groups; the northern nominate group and the southern melanolaimus group. The latter has sometimes been considered a separate species, the Golden-breasted Woodpecker (Colaptes melanolaimus). However, the groups are known to hybridize and consequently no major checklist currently recognize the split into two species.
