Birds

Notable Species

This is a Ramsar Site, Special Protected Area and Natural Reserve. Haff Reimech lies in the far south-east of the country in the valley of the Moselle and includes gravel-pits, grassland and scrub and the best area is around Remerschen.

More than 230 bird species have been recorded in this area and it is the breeding site for several species very rare in Luxembourg such as Great Crested Grebe and Little Bittern, Great Reed Warbler and Penduline Tit. Other breeding species in this excellent area include Common Kingfisher, Eurasian Eagle Owl and Black Woodpecker, Grey-headed Woodpecker and Middle Spotted Woodpecker.

Common Crane occurs in thousands on passage and migrating raptors can include European Honey Buzzard, Black Kite and Red Kite and Osprey. One or two Black-throated Diver appear in winter as well as Great Bittern, Smew, Peregrine Falcon and Short-eared Owl.

Vmibimbero's review

The pits have more than 16 ponds, many with reed. During february-april I had more than 80 species in the same paths, every weeks visiting the area. Threre are many hide, so digiscoping is easy! Pros

  • Little
  • but very diverse location.

Cons

  • Poor shorebirds migration.
