Carduelis magellanica

Identification

10–12 cm (4-4¾ in)

  • Greenish-yellow overall plumage
  • Black head, wings and tail

Females are duller with a greenish-olive upperparts, yellowish-green breast and sides.

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Argentina

Taxonomy

Formerly placed in genus Carduelis.

Subspecies

There are 11 subspecies including the Santa Cruz Siskin, S. m. santaecrucis, of central and eastern Bolivia which is sometimes considered to be a separate species.

  • S. m. capitalis: Mountains of extreme southern Colombia to Ecuador and north-western Peru
  • S. m. longirostris: South East Venezuela to Guyana and northern Brazil
  • S. m. paulus: Tropical and subtropical southern Ecuador and western Peru (south to Arequipa)
  • S. m. peruanus: Tropical and subtropical central Peru (Huánuco to Ayacucho and Cuzco)
  • S. m. urubambensis: Temperate southern Peru (Cuzco) to northern Chile (Tarapacá)
  • S. m. bolivianus: Temperate central and southern Bolivia
  • S. m. tucumanus: North West Argentina (Jujuy, Santiago and Santa Fe to Mendoza)
  • S. m. santaecrucis: East foothills of Andes of Bolivia (Santa Cruz)
  • S. m. alleni: South East Bolivia to Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina and southern Brazil
  • S. m. ictericus: South East Brazil (Minas Gerais) to Paraguay and extreme north-eastern Argentina
  • S. m. magellanicus: Uruguay and eastern Argentina (southern Corrientes to Río Negro)


Habitat

Woodland, savannas, scrubland, farmland, parks and gardens.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet consists mainly of seeds together with buds, leaves and some insects.
