Overview
Ijmuiden is located at the mouth of the main ship canal that connects Amsterdam with the North Sea. A long jetty is protruding into the sea from the Zuidpier visible on the map. The jetty itself is not shown. Sandy beaches, sand dunes and the smallish Zuid-Kennemerland National Park are to the south.
Birds
Notable Species
Ijmuiden is possibly the most reliable place to see Purple Sandpiper in the Netherlands in winter. They can usually be found along the jetty. The jetty may at times be closed due to very rough sea. A variety of shorebirds and marine species can be expected here in winter, including a chance for pelagic strays such as Little Auk and Ross's Gull. The sand dunes to the south may hold Snow Bunting.

Ijmuiden can be reached from Amsterdam on the A9 going west and north, bypassing Haarlem. Exit just south of the ship canal, head west (beware of traffic cameras) through Ijmuiden to the shore.
