Identification

Darwin's Rhea (Lesser Rhea) Pterocnemia pennata Ostrich-like bird, resembles Greater Rhea but much smaller. Plumage greyish-brown flecked with white. Height 90cm, female shorter.
Distribution
South America in south-eastern Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and north-western Argentina in southern parts of Argentina and Chile. Resident.
Taxonomy
Nominate race is found in southern Argentina and southern Chile, northern birds are placed in tarapacensis (Puna Rhea) in northern Chile and garleppi in remainder of range.
Habitat
