Identification

Mostly ochraceous with white spots edged in black on the upperside and no barring below; legs red.

Distribution

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. The inclusion of Costa Rica is based on collection of a single bird near Buenos Aires in the sw.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized:[1]

  • M. s. schomburgkii - Locally in Guyana and French Guiana
  • M. s. chapmani - E Brazil (Bahia) to Mato Grosso and n Bolivia

Habitat

Dry savanna and wet lowland grassland.
