Chloropsis hardwickii

Identification

  • Orange-ochre central underparts
  • Olive-green upperparts
  • Extensive black face and throat
  • Purple-blue moustache
  • Ochre wash on crown and sides
  • Dark blue flight feathers and tail

Females with green head and blue moustache. Juveniles are similar to Golden-fronted Leafbird but show some orange-ochre feathers below.

Distribution

Foothills of the Himalayas and south China to Indochina and the Malay Peninsula.

Taxonomy

Four subspecies are recognized1:

  • C. h. hardwickii from northern India east to southern China (Tibet, Yunnan), Burma, northwest Thailand and northern Laos
  • C. h. malayana in the uplands of Burma and peninsular Malaysia
  • C. h. melliana in southern China (Guizhou and Guangxi east to Fujian) and Vietnam
  • C. h. lazuliana in the uplands of Hainan

Habitat

Deciduous to evergreen forest, also secondary growth.

Behaviour

Its diet includes insects, spiders, fruits and nectar.
Forages usually in the canopy.
They make their nests from roots and fibres which are suspended from the edges of twigs at the end of a tree branch. Lays 2-3 eggs.
A resident species, an altitudinal migrant in the Himalayas and probably in other parts of its range.
