South America: found in central and south-east Peru, Bolivia, Chile and western Argentina.

Taxonomy

The SACC has evaluated N. kalinowskii as a synonym of N. ornata branickii - a subspecies of Ornate Tinamou. However, the Opus retains N. kalinowskii as a full species awaiting further deliberation. Clements[1] recognizes N. kalinowskii as a full species.

Subspecies

Three subspecies are recognized by Clements[1]:

  • N. o. branickii:
  • Puna of central Peru (Ancash to Apurímac)
  • N. o. ornata:
  • N. o. rostrata:
  • Andes of north-western Argentina (Jujuy and La Rioja)

The form Kalinowski's Tinamou (Nothoprocta kalinowskii) was described from three specimens. However, most checklist and the SACC now consider this form a synonym of N. o. branickii.

Habitat

Scrub and open woodland.

Behaviour

Diet

They have a very varied diet, especially seeds and fruit. Particularly important to them are clover seeds and leaves. They also eat small amounts of invertebrates, flower buds, tender leaves and roots.

Breeding

The male incubates the eggs in a ground nest, from multiple females. He also rears the chicks for about 2-3 weeks until they become independent.

Movements

The are thought to be a resident species.
