South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina

- Southern Colombia (arid tropical upper Magdalena Valley)
- H. m. chiribiquetensis:
- Southern Colombia (Sierra de Chiribiquete)

- Subtropical tepuis of south-eastern Venezuela (south-eastern Bolívar)

Habitat
Dry shrubby and scrub areas. Also found in the lower growth of tall deciduous woodland.
