Campylorhamphus trochilirostris

Identification

24 to 28 cm. It has a long tail and a long bill which curves downwards. Its back and tail are brown-red, while the belly is a lighter brown shade. Its head and throat are covered with brown and white streaks.

Distribution

Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina.

Taxonomy

Habitat

It inhabits rainforests, forests, and forests in mountainous regions up to a height of 6,600 feet (2,000 meters).

Behaviour

It eats insects and other invertebrates by pecking them off the trunks and branches of trees. They are solitary birds or can be found in pairs.

2-3 eggs are laid in an abandoned woodpecker hole or other tree cavity. Both parents help incubate eggs and feed chicks.
