Description
This species is essentially the western equivalent of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.
Identification
Black and white head has a red forecrown. Male has red chin and throat, female has a white throat. Belly is "dirty" yellowish. The main distinguishing feature when compared to the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker is a narrow red band on the nape (backside of head).
Distribution
Western U.S., winters in SW U.S., Central & western Mexico, including Baja California. Northern birds migrate to the southern parts of the range; birds on the coast are often permanent residents.
