Austria

Overview

Close to the Austrian capital and with a good range of interesting birds, the Vienna Woods have long been popular with travelling birders.

Birds

Notable Species

Collared Flycatcher and Red-breasted Flycatcher, Short-toed Treecreeper, Golden Oriole and the various woodpeckers are the main attractions and the Schonnbrunn Palace, within the city itself, has most of these and is easily worked.

Further afield the Lainzer Tiergarden to the south-west has deciduous, mixed and coniferous forest, meadows and streams. It has similar range of birds in addition to some more exciting species.

This former imperial hunting park is now a Nature Protection Area and has Black Stork, European Honey Buzzard and Eurasian Eagle Owl, European Nightjar, Black Woodpecker and White-backed Woodpecker and Common Kingfisher.

Passerine breeders include Wood Lark, Barred Warbler, Red-backed Shrike and Ortolan Bunting.

Access and Facilities

Schonnbrunn Palace can be found from the A23 road out of Vienna to Altmansdorf and the palace is 4km to the north. Lainzer Tiergarten has an information centre, marked trails and observation points and is easily reached by road from Vienna.
Using public transportation, Schonnbrunn Palace has its own stop on light rail line U4, while Lainzer Tiergarten is near the last stop (Hüttelsdorf) on the same line (U4): from the station, use the south exit, take the foot-bridge across the large road, continue in the same direction for one block, and from there follow signs towards the right towards Lainzer Tiergarten. You will enter through the Nikolaitor entrance.
