Identification
43 cm. Black-grey, red legs, bill, forehead shield and horn. Young males - buff, darkening as they mature, yellow bill and green legs.
Female - 36 cm, dark brown above and paler below, streaked and barred with darker markings, yellow bill, green legs. Chicks are black.
Distribution
South Asia from India and Sri Lanka to south China, Japan and Indonesia.

They breed in swamps.
Behaviour
They nest on the dry ground in marsh vegetation. 3-6 eggs are laid.
The diet includes insects, small fish and seeds. They probe in mud and shallow water as well as foraging on the ground.
