That’s me for the day - just 4 more species but worth the effort
Kingfisher
Woodcock
Crossbill:p
Goshawk:D

Unfortunately the day came to a sour conclusion when I had a run-in with a couple of numpties on scramblers in the last patch of ancient woodland round here. Hope this isn’t a flavour of what 2021 has in store:(

My contribution to Europe list:

Cloudy and cold weather today in Kampinos Forest, where I live. Birds seen:
  1. Black Woodpecker
  2. Common Blackbird
  3. Common Crane
  4. Eurasian Bullfinch
  5. Eurasian Jay
  6. Eurasian Magpie
  7. Eurasian Nuthatch
  8. Eurasian Siskin
  9. Eurasian Tree Sparrow
  10. European Crested Tit
  11. European Greenfinch
  12. Goldcrest
  13. Great Spotted Woodpecker

  15. Hooded Crow
  16. Marsh Tit
  17. Mistle Thrush
  18. Northern Raven
  19. Short-toed Treecreeper
  20. Yellowhammer
It was a calm, enjoyable walk. I learned that actually many Marsh Tits live in my area in winter and heard two Black Woodpeckers communicating with each other. One of the Great Tits sang.

Nice to get out in the sunshine and frozen rain on the ground (snow would be too polite a term for it). Nothing special unfortunately - really quite quiet overall to be honest. Garden and College Res combined list -

Teal
Shoveler 1m
Coot
Moorhen
Great Crested Grebe 13
Grey Heron

Rook
Jackdaw
Carrion Crow
Jay
Buzzard
Pied Wagtail
Meadow Pipit
Redwing

Goldfinch
Chaffinch
Bullfinch
Goldcrest
Chiffchaff 4
Blue Tit
Great Tit
Coal Tit
LT Tit
Wren

Dunnock
Stonechat mf

I expect I'll have forgotten something, a few hours still to go, a fair few common birds like Magpie still missing.

Probably a good 10 flowering plants (including Hazel and Bramble) and 1 mammal - Grey Squirrel

Nice birds....

What are numpties on scramblers?? I'm imagining dirtbikes but....

I will have a report from the SE US coming later. Cold, grey and rainy here, but as far as I know I haven't seen a numpty or a scrambler ;)

My local west London walk this morning:

Magpie
Carrion Crow
Jackdaw
Rook
Starling
House Sparrow
Reed Bunting
Chaffinch
Goldfinch
Linnet.

Most obvious omission is Red Kite which is an everyday bird over my garden but a grey manky day & not flying. Had 2 spots for Stonechat but no show. No major water bodies so limited selection of water birds. Others missing often see include Buzzard, Little Egret, Skylark, Coal Tit, Chiffchaff & the much scarcer now Greenfinch.

Didn't manage my usual new year circuit, instead just a walk from home around the north end of the village (Aviemore). Quite wet and cold and was walking on slushy snow in some parts and solid ice in others, thanks goodness for micro-spikes or I'd have spent a lot of time picking myself up off the ground! The only thing I can add is to the list is a Hooded Crow.

After walking quite a few miles with the pup I don’t think I can add anything to the UK list. Failed on Dipper despite being in a great area. Having said that has anyone added Mistle Thrush yet?

Rich

A few more for the Europe list:

Black-necked Grebe
Great Crested Grebe
Yellow-legged Gull
Black-headed Gull
White Wagtail
Red-breasted Merganser
Black-throated Diver

Chris

A stay at home day due to family commitments and a day long fog reducing visibility ( see photo from this am, the view stayed limited like this all day) so no Alpine species from me I‘m afraid. All I can add for Europe are the following :
Robin
Redwing
Hawfinch
Long-tailed Tit
Goldfinch

Back home and just about warmed up. 31 species in a bit under 3 hours. Looking at the UK lists received so far, I think Pochard is the only new species to add, my first of the winter.

No additions to the UK list, but my hour long walk around Birmingham, Dingles and Trittiford mostly, gave:

Magpie
Wood pigeon
Long tailed tit
Crow
Blackbird
Black headed gull
Lesser black backed gull
Buzzard
Robin
Jay
Goldfinch
Great tit
Redwing
Mallard
Mute swan
Greylag
Canada goose
Coot
Feral pigeon
Tufted duck
Moorhen
Shoveler
Blue tit

Happy new year everyone.

For the UK list. A brief afternoon walk along part of Milton Creek, Sittingbourne produced:

1. Blackbird
2. Black-headed Gull
3. Black-tailed Godwit
4. Carrion Crow
5. Chaffinch
6. Collared Dove
7. Coot
8. Cormorant
9. Curlew
10. Great Crested Grebe
11. Green Woodpecker
12. Greenshank
13. Grey Plover
14. Herring Gull
15. Lapwing
16. Little Egret
17. Little Grebe
18. Magpie
19. Mallard
20. Moorhen
21. Redshank

I’m sure you’ve seen both at some time just under another name - you’re right scramblers are dirt bikes (or pit bikes as they call them here) and a numpty is derived from numbskull I think - ie idiots.
Just what you don’t want to meet on a peaceful walk through the woods.
