Hello! Made this account just for this. Today I saw this bird chilling on my bird feeder stand and snapped a picture before it was scared off by a stellar jay. I’ve never seen anything like it where I live! Maybe the size of three chickadees? Did not get to hear it’s call. Anyone have ideas? Also please tell me if I’m doing this wrong :)

Hi Duchess and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Thanks for clarification...

Thats where history and science go round the world... a Western American Bird discovered in the 18th century by a German Scientist (Georg Wilhelm Steller) on the Russian Great Nordic Expedition (or Second Kamtchatka expedition) led by Danish Captain Vitus Bering ( They discovered Alaska in that expedition , among many other things )

It was never meant as teasing- I am sorry if it came out that way!

i had seen this spelling (stellar jay) several times already and not with photos, and i was wondering if this is a local name for this or another species , or just different writing for Steller´s.
so i took the opportunity to ask, when I came upon the spelling here

I’m living with my parents while attending Uni virtually right now and asked them. They had no idea of the actual spelling and we even looked it up to confirm the correct name. I think there was a miscommunication somewhere in our family. I’ve always figured it was “stellar” because it has the colors of the night sky.
