The 8x42 is a good deal, try it anyone. See if it is for real. When you get the e mail that it is shipping, you will know. For 28 dollars you get a pair that is 90% as good as a 500 dollar pair.

Bonus on Bushnell Legends

It appears that the Legend 12x50 and 8x42 at Sports Authority may even qualify for a free (with $10 shipping) waterproof/breathable jacket as a rebate:

http://bushnell.com/images/JacketCounterCard.pdf

I'm a little concerned about whether they've got the prices on their roofs and porros reversed for these two. I called customer service and the people who answered don't know enough about binoculars to tell me which I'm getting.

Kevin Purcell Wednesday 17th December 2008 21:39

Thanks BinoBoy ...

The image on the web site is slightly wrong too ... it's 191050 which is the 10x50 version of the Legend porro but the 8x42 (190842) will look like that but slightly shorter.

I suspect the $27 might be a typo for $127 (as the other prices aren't that good).

Still if they honor it it should be a good deal.

EDIT: try this too

http://www.sportsauthority.com/ent

then search for the "Bushnell Legend" to get 15% off (i.e. -$4.12 ... about half the shipping cost).

Well I tried it and hope I get a Bushnell Legend 8x42 porro. Seems like a nice bin. I'll let you know ;)

EDIT2: They should be around $110 street or so.

EO has them with the jacket offer and a free Bushnell BackTrack GPS (a little hockey puck GPS). You can also see from the picture that they should be more compact than shown in the web site picture.

Im in for one. I hope its the Roof Prism 8x42 and not the porro 8x42(which is at the bottom of the list).

The illustration though is of a black porro ... but I take your point.

EDIT: Hmmm ... the pictures don't change in sync with the popup and the first one is a porro. So perhaps it is a 8x42 roof. That would match the description.

So they go for $210ish. Not the widest FOV at 6.3 degrees.

http://www.eagleoptics.com/index.asp?pid=546

The porro is the better bin though. If they're both Legends they should be at least OK ;)

Where is that gift horse ... I wanna check out it's teeth.

Just got the confirmation email (we are processing your order ...)

orbitaljump Wednesday 17th December 2008 22:28

The 12x50s would make a decent astro bino.

OwenM Wednesday 17th December 2008 22:53

Didn't want to get too greedy, so just ordered two of the 8x42 for gifts. I actually hope it's the porro, 'cause if it is I'll keep one!

btw, the 8x40 Pentax I thought was such a deal didn't work out. Turned out to be a PCF V, and I canceled it, since it was the WPII's coatings and eyecups I wanted to check out.

BinoBoy Thursday 18th December 2008 01:34

Legends sold out

They're not in the drop down list anymore. I ordered one of each. Hope they send them!

I stopped at Sportsman's Warehouse and took a look through a pair of the 12x50s. They were surprisingly nice. Smaller and lighter than I expected. They felt good in my hands and the image was decent. The FOV could be larger, but for $35 they would be my all time best bargain on bins.

What will you do with them all? I can only use about 5 pairs of 8x binoculars. They get a little heavy after the third pair around the neck.

If you just carry two of N then you have N * (N-1) / 2 combinations.

It can be entertaining (and informative) to AB compare bins with real birds ;)

Minox BV 10x42 BL Binocular #62168, that has a slight color imperfection in the rubber armor coating, for only $159.99.
"slight color imperfection" in Green bins. And Made in China.

I wonder if this is the same OEM as Vortex? ;)

Note this is a different (and "lesser") model than the Minox BL 8x42 BR mentioned above. And CL have those too for $249. Also in green only (same issue?).

I helped sell out the 8x42 Legends........... Like I need more......

orbitaljump Thursday 18th December 2008 18:20

The Lengends are back in stock again.

BinoBoy Thursday 18th December 2008 18:39

Legend deal must be for real

I think the prices on the Legends must be legitimate. Otherwise, they wouldn't have put it back up. I was worried that I had screwed things up for the rest of you by calling customer service and asking if it was an error. He said that he was sending a note to the web people to check on it. Maybe they took it down and then put it back up after they determined it was correct. Won't know for sure until we get shipping notices.

I was originally worried that I would get porros instead of roofs. Now that I've checked out the specs I think I might prefer the porros. At least they don't duplicate what I've already got. The question now is whether to buy more for gifts or resell. Right after New Year's is the worst time of year to sell stuff, so I'd probably have to hold them until spring. I hope they come before Christmas since I'll be out of town for the holidays.

JohnJos Thursday 18th December 2008 19:04

Well, I just received an e-mail stating that they could not fulfill my order. I have ordered one pair of 8x42 roof Legends yesterday. Anyone else seeing this e-mail?

Tero Thursday 18th December 2008 19:08

I like the optics of the porros. The actual...wrong on many sites..weight is around 30oz, and the focus is till a bit stiff in one spot. My favorite porro so far.

DHB Thursday 18th December 2008 19:13

I didn't give them an email addy so we'll see.......

orbitaljump Thursday 18th December 2008 19:25

Just got a cancellation notice on my order of 1 pair of Bushnell 8x42 Roofs.

JohnJos Thursday 18th December 2008 19:32

You know, it may have been my fault. I had placed two different orders yesterday for the same Legend 8x42 roofs. On the first I did not apply the extra discount. So I canceled that order on-line and reordered with the discount ($4 about). The first order was never canceled so I called this morning and canceled the first order, using the precise order number provided. SA may have just canceled both instead. But their email does not indicated that the order was canceled at my request. Instead it says:

"We regret to inform you that we are unable to complete your order. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. The following item(s) is unavailable and has been cancelled from your order:"

Indicating lack of supply I presume. Just letting everyone know my experience. It may be due to my own mistake or a combination of me & SA. I've reordered a pair today.

Please let me know if anyone else receives this message from SA. Thanks.

JohnJos Thursday 18th December 2008 19:35

Thanks orbitaljump. Certainly seems suspicious. If it was a mistake, why doesn't SA just own up to it? And why post the same price again after taking it off the website yesterday? We'll see what happens soon enough.

DHB Thursday 18th December 2008 19:40

I'll call as soon as I woof down my sandwich......

orbitaljump Thursday 18th December 2008 19:46

And why post the same price again after taking it off the website yesterday? --- John Jos

Bingo!

DHB Thursday 18th December 2008 19:48

My order was canceled too. The rep said none are in stock at the warehouse's and the website is late being updated.

Oh well....

They screwed up the pricing but won't admit it (perhaps in some states there might be a commitment to completeing the order if they don't have a disclaimer someplace). Not too suprising.

But their web people don't seem to have the site updated properly. It's still there at the old price. ;)

Perhaps I should send this as a tip to a few of the deals sites ...

orbitaljump Thursday 18th December 2008 20:02

They should be appropriately tortured.
