Releasing great tits back into the wild (1 Viewer)

Came across an abandoned great tit nest last Saturday evening in an extractor vent at the back of our daughters house, monitored it for 24+ hours and there was definitely no parent activity around it (or since), we managed to extract the nest from the vent and proceeded to feed the chicks (4) with food (liquidised dog food initially, meal worms, crushed up peanuts/sunflower hearts, and drops of water, we have them in an old budgie cage, they are thriving, they have nearly full plumage, constantly preening/flapping wings and generally seem pretty happy with themselves...

Obvious question , how do we prepare to release them back into the wild?, our daughter lives in a pretty rural setting with a large garden, plenty of trees and ground cover, any advice would be appreciated

Kind regards,Dave

Or maybe a shrub so they don't have to fly too high. I'd leave the open cage in the garden and let them make their own way out and once they've left, bring the cage back in to the house so they fend for themselves.

Update...……..
Have them well over a week now, they are getting stronger and bigger by the day, just beginning to peck some food from a feed tray we have in the cage, but not in any substantial amount, Had them out in the garden today and had the top of the budgie cage down on the grass with mealworms and small bits of suet in the grass, they were "interested" but not really taking much. Back in the house this evening one got out of the cage and was quite adept at flying around the front room!! eventually got him back in the cage and all is quiet...…….
really want to see them feeding more before we even think of releasing them, but hopefully that wont be too long...………….
more updates to follow

Regards Dave
