I came across this butterfly happily feeding on the shrub in the picture. However, I'm having a hard time identifying exactly what species of butterfly it is.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I'm pleased to say I've finally managed to ID the butterfly. It's a Painted Lady(Vanessa cardui). I have never seen one in the area where I live Burnley & Pendle and that's what confused me.

There's a big influx of this migratory species into the UK currently. I've already seen more in London this week than the last 3 years combined! Nice to have them.

Thanks for your reply and information aeshna5, it's very much appreciated. They are stunningly beautiful butterflies and it's a pleasure to see them.

We had a major migration of Painted Lady Butterflies earlier this year, with 10s of millions flying across the island! I counted 505 individuals in a 5 minute period flying past our Villa patio!
