The bird was quite a distance away in low light, so the picture's not great, to say the least. I don't think it's a wood pigeon.

Hi Gummo
Its a Fieldfare- a thrush that will have come over with the winter weather.
They are normally quite noisey so you may have heard it giving a 'chacking' note.
 
Thanks everyone, again. No, John, I never heard a sound from it and it's the first time I've seen one in my new-found interest in birds.
