Small mystery bird - Playa Del Rey, CA - USA (1 Viewer)

Went out to the Ballona Marsh after the Kentucky Derby (shameless racing plug) this afternoon.

I saw a small bird with black wings that had white circles on them fly by me.

All I got was one quick glance.

The bird was about the size of an american goldfinch or slightly larger.

The tips of the wings looked rounded to me.

Any idea what I saw???

Just a guess but how about a redstart. American would make more sense but painted sounds like what your are describing.
