Furthermore - i use an App on my Android smartphone called Endomondo.

It uses GPS and does not need a mobile SIM of the country that i am in. I use it to log all my walking and cycling when abroad. It logs it real time and does not cost anything...

There was a related incident in Poland few years ago. A researcher put a SIM-based transmitter on a White Stork to follow it to Africa. But somebody in Africa shot the stork, removed the SIM from the transmitter and started making phone calls with it, producing huge bills.
