BirdMIKE, is an instrument that records and plays back bird calls, songs or even your voice without the need for computers. It saves all recordings onto the 80 page British Birds Diary. BirdMIKE has installed in it high quality professional recordings of 270 British Birds: calls and songs. Recordings are by Jean C Roch - Europe's leading expert in bird sounds. Also included is Geoff Sample's advice on how to identify species. There are over 4 hours of expert recordings in each BirdMIKE.

(The BirdMIKE technology is extensively used by RNIB - their PENfriend product - and in education - RecorderPEN. PENfriend won the 2009 Enabled Award "the electrical product that has changed lives" and RecorderPEN was a finalist at the prestigious BETT 2010 "Digital Devices in Education" and the Education Resources Awards 2010)

The 80 page British Birds Audio Diary is a logbook where sounds recorded by you are saved and triggered. In the front is an index of all species sorted in Scientific order. Touch the Coal Tit 'sound spot' and listen, then touch the Great Tit 'sound spot' and compare... At the back of the book is another index where the 270 British species are sorted in Alphabetical order. In between are 70 blank pages with 6 'sound spots' on each page where you can save your own recordings, such as bird sounds or names, place details, etc. You can write your personal notes on each page.

Over time, the diary will become a rich audio memoir of your birding experiences.

The pack also includes one plastic encapsulated Pocket Field Guide which has all recordings of the 270 species. The Guide folds neatly into any pocket, is light and ideal for those occasions when you do not want to take the Diary.
There are 54 coloured stickers of "Well-known British Birds" to stick to fridges or your favourite bird books. Touch BirdMIKE on any sticker and you will hear the calls and songs, loud and clear.

To test yourself, there is Set 1 of the Quiz Cards - listen to a bird sound through BirdMIKE and touch the appropriate bird. BirdMIKE announces "correct" or says "No, try again". It then plays back the same sound. You have three tries before BirdMIKE moves onto the next sound.
This is a really clever tool to sharpen your bird call recognition skills. We guarantee that the novice will double their recognition of British Birds species

Beautifully illustrated stickers of Common British Birds, sound enabled to play back songs and calls. You can also record the birds you have heard onto each sticker.

Included are some technical extras: although BirdMIKE has a built-in microphone, for a bird up to 30m away you can use the extra Directional Microphone. If you wish to listen privately, there are earphones and a USB.
Finally.... there are 281 FREE recordable sticky labels or memory aids where you can record and stick onto photographs, message boards, etc!

Pros
  • Very easy to use, anywhere, instantly recalls souds
Cons
  • they only have British birds
Listening to bird calls in the kitchen is a real joy. I had great pleasure just passing away the time listening to the calls from the "tit" family, just by touching soundspots in the British Birds Diary. You pick up very quickly how a great tit differs in sound from a blue tit, and on several occasions, with the window open I got a reply.

I found recording the replies to be very easy and saving the sounds into the diary allowed me to play back late at night. I have now saved about 20 days of outings into the diary, and flicking through the pages, listening! in bed, was a real joy. I could clearly recall the day, the weather, the place where the recordings were made.

I would really recommend this product- it is therapeutic and easy to use, even for me.http://www.birdforum.net/images/smilies/angel2.gif
