Hi
I have found the camera better to use with a battery grip, possibly due to having large hands.

I have researched reviews at length before purchasing a battery grip. The grip I purchased was from an independent manufacturer and I cannot see how Canon can charge so much for their version.

Cost 39.00 (inc P&P)

Also bought batteries independently and cannot fault them, equally as good as one supplied by Canon.

Only thing I have to say is I was using the 400D and a sigma 170-500mm, thought it was the lens that made the images look flat, bought the 40D and it is fab, images are spot on, a great camera

Pros
  • ISO noise, battery life,& colours are brilliant.
Cons
  • No Lcd protection, again!
This is also my second sample, the first one had a mirror problem but this one is a fantastic camera for the money, I think it's better than spending a couple of grand or so on a 1D if your not a pro.

Pros
  • New AF cross type, better viewfinder, more customization of menu, excellent image quality
Cons
  • 1 button for 2 fonctions again
This is the second sample of this camera I bough. The first one was some of the very first arrive in canada and the image quality was very bad: noise, artifact so it seem to have a problem with the processor. The second sample are just great and the upgrade from the 30D are real even if it's just for the auto focus and the viewfinder to name that.

Pros
  • magnesium alloy construction, ability to customize, picture quality
Cons
I bought this camera about 2 months ago upgrading from a 400D which I had only had for about 8 months. I use it all the time, mostly with a canon 24 - 105mm or the Canon 400 f5.6. (the forgotten 400) and a battery grip.

The quality of the images is superb and the ability to customise the whole photography process makes taking photos a joy. As has been said before, this is more a cut down EOS1 Mk III than a a 400D upgrade.

Pros
  • image quality (color gradation, resolution), noise, speed
Cons
  • autofocus calibration
This is a very nice birding camera, though I'm still sorting out some focus calibration issues in both of the units that I own. I've posted a review with many sample images on my web site:

I hope to keep that review updated as I resolve the focus issues and add more samples.

Pros
  • Well built, quick, Live view
Cons
  • less battery-life than 20D
So far I really like my new 40D, but seems battery drains as on/off-switch is turned on (I never turned my 20D off)
Very quick and responsive AF, and nice Image Quality. I have a problem with CR2 RAW-files in PS CS3 - I have to convert to .dng before doing rest of the work in PS RAW.

Pros
  • good handling - great IQ - nice FPS
Cons
  • now I want another one!
I got my 40D a couple of weeks ago and am very impressed with it. The camera feels solid and well made, and fits very well in the hand. The menus and controls are well laid out and simple to use. The viewfinder is nice and bright (though not up to 5D/1D standards), and the rear LCD is easy to see in most conditions. I've been really impressed with the battery life, the first charge gave me over 2000 shots!

My main reasons for buying the camera were the fast frame rate (6.5 fps) and the seemingly good high ISO performance. Neither of these have disapointed. The level of noise at ISO800 is so god that it often doesn't need NR (assuming you got the exposure spot on) and noise is acceptable at ISO1600.

The biggest and most surprising feature of the camera has been the image quality. I knew it would be good, but I'd not expected to see a noticeable improvement over the 400D. Images out of the 40D need less processing and sharpening to acheive the same results.

All round I'm very happy with the 40D (looking forward to trying it with the grip). My only issue is now I've got one I want to upgrade my second body too!
