Publi-reportage: testing the Olivone T90-ED
Date online: 04/12/08 - Submitted to the Committee on Reading
Olivone society is still very little known in Europe, although its sales are progressing very quickly. Its headquarters is based in Vancouver, Canada, but the production units are in China.
Olivone is a leading manufacturer of long-views which most production is sold under various brands, classic business strategy of the Chinese producers. The most successful, however, display the logo of the society, including many large-format views of T 80 and T 90, which also exist in an optical "ED" (extra-low dispersion): T-80 and ED T-ED 90.
Jean-Pierre Liegeois, responsible for Topoptics, the distributor views the long-Olivone for French-speaking Europe, we present the results of the test model of the flagship brand, the T90-ED.

Abstract
Olivone is an optics manufacturer based in Vancouver, Canada, but all its production units installed in China. Its "star product" is the T90 ED Spotting Scope Olivone, which is perfect for serious terrestrial observations such as bird-watching. The T90mm ED spotting scope is a high performance model that features razor sharp optics. It uses high-quality optical lenses that have a high content of fluorite, which reduces deviation in your images. These special lenses are called ED (extra-low dispersion) lenses, and are mainly used in powerful telescopes. With the ability to attach your camera to it, is an excellent medium to aid in most, and if not, all of your high-quality photographic interests.
Jean-Pierre Liegeois, manager of Topoptics, the distributor of Olivone for French-speaking countries in Europe, presents us the results of the trial of the T90 ED.

We tried the flagship model of the mark which is talking more and more of him in Europe: a long-view with a diameter of 90mm and fitted with glasses "extra-low dispersion (ED): T-ED 90 .
Olivone technical Announces classic but very good quality: BaK4 prisms, full multi-layer coating, sealing, filling with nitrogen under pressure with O-rings.
T-ED 90 is among the models at a reasonable price and, if we consider its staffing ED lens, one can even say it has no competitors on the market.
By opening the packaging, it discovers a sober. The long-view is protected by a black cloth bag polyester mesh fine, robust and resistant to rain.
A zipper reveals ample eye and the wheel of development. In contrast, another zipper frees goal. The heel of attachment to the tripod emerges without difficulty. It is designed so that it fits into a "click" and without interim head Olivone tripods and many other brands. Gone are the eternal problems of fixing shoes which loosen and long-view ranging from right to left!

A little broad and "floating", the cover is not a model of elegance, but it has the great merit to exist, to be effective and to be provided at no extra A conventional plastic cover protects the lens .
As for the eye, it sheltered under a metal cylinder which is screwed on a step designed to also receive the ring positioning Olivone digiscoping adapter (another specialty of the mark).
The eye automatically provided with the long-view is a zoom showing 22-68 x (20-60 x models on T 80 and T 80-ED whose focus is a bit shorter). Olivone also offers a fixed eye wide field which magnifies 36 x (30 x 80 mm on).

Under the cover, one discovers a long rubber tube coated anthracite. The dressing makes a good impression and has no unsightly smudges. The shoe attachment to the tripod is carried by a rotating collar that will make life easier for those who like to lay out or from their car by setting the long-view a clip window.
The wheel of development is simple, well located on the right side (too bad for the left hand ...).
In short, if it is out of the ostentatious luxury distilled (at what price ...) by Swarovski, Leica and others, the presentation of the Olivone T-90 ED may be classified as serious and good.
Technical specifications

- Minimum distance (apprx.) zoom 20x-60x: 8 m - 10 m
T-ED 90 in the hands
With this diameter, we can not expect a compact instrument. T-ED 90 has a length of 57 cm and a weight of more than 1,800 grams. It is obvious that the couple will have a robust and stable tripod.
Its length creates an ambiguous position important tend to be bitten to the long-nose, but on the contrary, improves the balance if it installs equipment digiscoping. Those who fear that congestion could opt for T-ED 80, more than six cm shorter and lighter than 150 grams.
The zoom is equipped with a simple folding rubber eyecup, simple formula that has proved its worth. For us to spend a minimum magnification (22 x) maximum (68 x), it rotates on a third turn. Its use is simple, practical, no problem.

The small wheel of development requires more than three laps to go the minimum (8 m) to infinity, which is quite long, but has the advantage of a good progression. If the transition from a developing to a distant focusing at close will not be rapid, the adjustment end, it will be easy. Of course, at that price, we could not expect the double wheel introduced by Leica and resumed by Zeiss and Kowa ...
The two "ears" of the bag-T90 ED

The two large "ears" of the material that emit the eye rather rebels and would have hoped for a double closure system to open or to close a more adjusted. It will use an "D" ...
The amazing optical performance
When the eye down to the zoom, there is first a large lens that enables a comfortable observation. At 22x, the image is very beautiful and well stitched, seamless and without disturbing dominant. A thin blue fringe occupies the extreme edge, but it disappears when you activate the zoom. When you increase the magnification, the image remains very good until about 45 x, then its brightness decreases, which is a common phenomenon even in high-end. Beyond 55x, the image is dull and lacks sharpness.

In terms of focusing the Olivone T-90 ED is no miracle merely to 8 meters, but we agree that the observation in the first few meters is not really the role of a long -view.
When the peak T-ED 90 against in-days and it varies slightly developed around the optimum, we see the development of small bands of color in high contrast lines.
ED glasses, based on fluorine derivatives very expensive, have different qualities, more or less effective in their fight against the phenomenon of diffraction differential wavelengths. Seeing the sale price of the T-ED 90, it was clear qu'Olivon could not opt for glasses ED higher performance. However, the phenomenon is still discreet and more limited as an instrument equipped with a non-treated. The T90 does not steal the name "ED".
Comparison with Nikon Fieldscope ED 82
The optical balance of the T-90 ED is very satisfactory, but to have the heart net, we have compared to other instruments that have "a presence" as the Nikon Fieldscope ED 82, also equipped with low dispersion glass.
If the presentation of this long-view is more flattering, the price is significantly higher, about double that of the T-ED 90, when the team zoom and a protective cover.
Yet, once we met eye to eye, the difference is far from striking ...
The results obtained with the Nikon 25-56 zoom does not differ from those provided by the 90-Olivone T ED: good pictures and homogeneous nosedives, but decline when above the halfway zoom.
Of course, this is not negligible, Nikon offers its instruments on a 10-year warranty, then that of Olivone is limited to 2 years (extension possible).
T-ED 90 and digiscoping

Source: Topoptics
Very interested in the development of technical digiscoping, the company offers a Olivone equipment for long-views, of course most relevant for T 80 and T-ED 90-ED. A British site is almost entirely devoted to the same "digiscoping prowess" of these instruments.
Our tests confirmed the readiness of the T-90 ED on the subject. The eye fixed 36x wide field is more favorable. On T 80 and T 80-ED whose focus is a bit shorter, it magnifies 32x. But in its lower magnifications thanks to its wide lens, the 22-68 zoom is already very satisfactory.
As "gross", the images obtained are not competing with dive that produce a Swarovski HD or a Leica APO. There is a bit of color to high contrast boundaries.
But, after some simple editing on a good program for image editing, although a clever man will find a difference.
We can therefore say that Olivone T 80 and T-ED 90-ED-long views the cheapest that can enter through the front door in the universe digiscoping.
A nice bulletin
The least we can say is that the 90-Olivone T ED encounter great expectations of a public interest in increasing optical "processed" in order to make the digiscoping, but germaniques which tariffs or even Japanese, are staggering.
A long-view plain and simple but comfortable to use and powerful observation that both digiscoping, all without ravaging the portfolio is a kind of instrument that was expected for some time.
Other products
In addition to the long-view, Olivone produces a range of accessories including optics and tripods. Note also that bosses of the company also control the giant American Astronomical optics Celestron ... which has equipped telescopes compact space shuttles.
In short, it will be understood, Olivone is one of those quiet giants behind the scene, shoot a lot of strings.
