Pros
  • cf. Kowa YF30-6: Yosemite BX-1 has quick-clips on neck strap
Cons
  • cf. Kowa YF30-6: Yosemite BX-1 has loose, imprecise, eye cups
I could see no difference between the good central sharpness and view with Yosemite BX-1 and Kowa YF30-6, which was 25 more expensive when I purchased it in UK but could be worth it for the better eyecups.

However, and if weight is not so important, there are more substantial binoculars available at these prices.

Pros
  • inexpensive, clear and bright, cute, durable, high quality for the price
Cons
  • eyecups are just a tad hard/ridid.
These were my very first binocular for birding and I still use them occasionally. Overall, for the price you can't beat these. I think they are the best inexpensive binoculars out there. They are very sharp and bright and rather comfortable to hold. Everyone should have a pair of these, as sometimes the 6x power is great for close bird watching or butterfly watching. The FOV is wonderful. I liked these over the 8x pair I owned. I now use 7x42 Leupold Cascades. I really like the Leupold brand. They have never dissapointed me and I've owned 3 pairs.

Pros
  • price, color, light gathering, sharpness, mechanical operation
Cons
  • THE slightest loss of sharpness on edges fo FOV which for the price is forgiveable
Just a reiteration really to what others have said. I own a pair of Swarovski "Habicht SL" and have had a pair of Leitz-Leica roofs and can say that 99% of the people out there would have a hard time seeing any difference in them save FOV in the Habichts (which of course are 7X42!) and slightly better edge sharpness. Of course they are $600.00 so I guess you've gotta get something for that extra money! The eye relief (cups) on these little glasses are easy to use and the glass is rugged over all; Leupold learned that lesson in their rifle scopes.

Pros
  • Sharpness, contrast, eye relief, comfortable to hold
Cons
  • Play in the focuser wheel, quite strong light rays and reflexes when looking at strong light sources(especially with dark background)
Excellent binocular for the price.
The sharpness (except for the outer part of FOV) beats the renowned mid-priced roof modell Pentax 8x43 DCF SP.

The magnification, size and weight of this binocular are especially suitable for children, but actually very good for adults too! I really like this nice instrument. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

6x binoculars are underestimated; the most details you can se with 8x you also will see with 6x, but with a larger field of view. And you will have the brightness of a 10x50 in the size of a 8x30. It's the choice in the long run and usable day or night.

(Voluntary full disclosure: this description was written and submitted by John E. Riutta, Observation Market Development Leader for Leupold.)

The Leupold Yosemite 6x30mm binocular is the first binocular designed for use by the entire family. It was created by a partner in the optics industry and myself. Our purpose was to create a binocular suitable for use by our children; a binocular that was not a toy and that would not cause children eye strain from poor optical design or frustration from inappropriate physical design. Additionally, it had to be affordable so that cost would not prohibit its being bought for children. In the end, we created a binocular useable not only by children but by the entire human population.

Too many people think it is perfectly acceptable to use compact binoculars for children but compacts are made for adults the magnification is too high and the overall design is simply not designed for children to easily use; as the father of a young daughter, I know this from experience.

Traditionally, binoculars have been designed for the average man. Consequently, they are usually too large for nearly all children and many women (not to mention a sizeable percentage of men). This results in many people not being able to use them comfortably or effectively.

The Yosemite 6x30mm binocular is designed for the average person. Most importantly, the interpupillary distance (IPD) on the Yosemite 6x30mm binocular spans a larger range.

Traditionally, binoculars are designed for men who average 66mm. Most adult women in the U.S. have IPD ranging from 56-66mm, averaging 63mm. Whats more, adult IPD is not even reached until the mid teenage years. Most traditional binoculars IPDs do not close to 56mm. In many cases, they only close to 60mm.

Other design modifications have also been made to make the binocular more universally useful. The body size is slightly smaller and the focus control is slightly larger; both to accommodate smaller hands. The magnification level of 6x allows for a wide field of view, 8 degrees, enabling beginners and less experienced users to more easily locate objects while viewing through the binocular. Finally, the Leupold Yosemite 6x30mm binocular weighs only 17 oz., making it light enough for easy carrying by anyone.

Pros
  • Good field of view, low price but very good optical performance.
Cons
  • the diopter adjustment is hard to move and not clearly marked.
I like this binocular it is small enough to carry around yet it offers good performance. Better than most compact binoculars. It is inexpensive so if they are stolen or lost you won\'t be out a lot of money. Good enough to use all the time as long as the distances are not to far. Easy for inexperienced binocular users to operate. Good binocular for the novice who you might bring along. The optics are very good for the type of binocular this is.

I would recommend them as a back up pair of binoculars. I used to use the B&L 7x26 customs in this role and I now use the Leupolds.
