I had some reasonable results with the 300/2.8 IS...

I had some reasonable results with the 300/2.8 IS + 1.4x and 2.0 x giving 840mm at f8 (1344mm fov on my 1.6x cropper) but it was certainly not a combo for everyday use.

I have tried the 1.4x MkIII and cannot see any difference between it and the MkII, either in IQ or focus speed. The 2x is a different story though with the MkIII being a fair bit better IMO.

It switches over to f8 at about 340mm on the zoom scale. I also have a Canon 100-400 mkII (and Canon 1.4x tc) and although it takes a 1.4x tc very well (for a zoom lens) there is definitely some lose...

I am not sure that 'stupid' is the right word. There are times when the native focal length of any lens is not enough for birds so I would not say its stupid to use a converter to give you the focal...
