My thoughts on this would be a DA lens, a* designation would put the lens beyond many peoples budgets, it goes without saying that the lens will have SMC coating and possibly the newer dirt repellent...

It's a a common misconception that old lenses wont stop down on modern DSLRs, but the stop down mechanism is still there, even modern lenses stop down via a mechanical linkage from the camera body...

I've just aquired the "almost" legendary A*300mm f4 weighing in at just 850grams and only 132mm long this is one awfully compact lens given its focal length.

I think we worry too much about IQ, the DA*300mm will hold its own against anything you throw at it but the Sigmas are quite capable bits of glass, I think my PPG gallery proves that.
