I have the previous version of Swarovski El 8.5x42. I want to upgrade to the SF 8x42 for the simple reason that I prefer 8x over 8.5x. 8x is the reason you get bigger FOV with the SF model. Also...

Interesting point. I always found the old Trinovid to be breathtaking.

Despite having lower values for ER, brightness, etc.

I had a 8x42 BA, a very impressive optical instrument despite being a bit dated. Not as bright as newer models but still as sharp as anything they make today.

You are saying 'big' like it's a problem. I want my optics to be expensive and big with more substance to them.

Pound per dollar, it's a better buy. More resolution, more power, more optical...

Interesting point.
I am much more worried about overdrive past infinity versus close-up focus that is irrelevant. I really don't care about 8 feet or even 25 feet. I think that's just absurd. Binos...

I just saw this.

I have been using Swaro EL for the last 10 years with success, they go all the way to -6 D, just barely sufficient.

My next item will be Zeiss 8x42 SF. Zeiss told me they go to at...

will probably upgrade to the latest-greatest Zeiss Victory SF 8x42, with a 10x50 SLC being a serious contender.

I am inclined to get a 8x42 Zeiss SF but before I do, I will definitely check out that 8x56 or 10x56 SLC just because you sold me on that idea.

And may end up with one.

There is nothing wrong with significant ER, the issue is when the eyecup cannot raise high enough to accommodate the ER.

I had precisely that situation with Swaro EL 8.5x. The eyecups that came...

Interesting points you make.
I had a similar problem with Swaro EL. The ER was just right. But the eyecups were not long enough. I had to install eyecups from a 8x50 SLC to get the proper ER and...

Correct.. interesting point.

I think 10 works best with 50mm and 8x best with 42mm.

If I got a 30 or 32mm, I would want 6x or 7x power, but that's just me.

An inexpensive 6x30?

Looking for a quality but not very expensive 6x30? Something that's easy to carry everywhere and not a huge loss if stolen from the car.

Sweet. If I could have just one bino for the rest of my life, this is it.
I would have to wear contact lenses however - which I do anyway when I engage in such activities.

The really cool thing is, with proper Diopters at infinity, you get choices:

1. Using no eyewear at all. No glasses, no contacts. That generates the ultimate view. I hate glassing with eyewear.

2....

I don't mind the focus in my 2008 vintage Swaro EL. It could be just a bit slower however. I think they increased the speed several times between the original late 90's model and today.

Fast focus...
