I used neutral density perspex, had birds sitting just a few inches away and they never saw me, you just have to make sure no light gets in the hide from anywhere else.

The main use is to stop any risk of the lens wasting time trying to focus in areas you don't want it to, for birds i mainly used the 10m to infinity, insects flowers etc the 2.8 to 10mt

Depends on budget and what lenses you have, as for lens i feel the best buy at the moment is the Sigma 105mm macro, don't be tempted with normal lenses that have a macro facility.
