Assuming you intend to hold on to the 7D2, the 100-400 you mention is a truly excellent lens and would serve you well. It will work for BIF with a 1.4x attached but would not be my choice for fast action. You may struggle to get the desired background blur with this lens. Perhaps also consider a...
Very nice images barred wobbler a testimony to Eye af - which I also endorse as being exceptional.
You seem to have a deep seated antipathy towards Zone af despite the fact that by your own admission, you've never tried it. That is quite bizarre but each to their own.
For the record I don't...
Good question Roy and I'm still trying to find the best solution.
Animal eye is really good and when it works it can be very effective indeed, I was photographing a Dotterel just the other day and when they're feeding, they can scurry around at a fair pace. Animal eye was excellent.
What I find is that the eye af works well for flyers providing it's a large and relatively slow moving subject like Gull.
It may be my bad technique, I don't know and it's still work in progress.
If I didn't instantly lock on using eye af, the focus went wildly out and couldn't refocus in time -...
You may need to figure out whether you want to shoot RAW at 20fps for bursts. It's not something that I've done or ever likely to do but worth checking out. I would use the CFE card in that unlikely scenario.
BTW. I also bought a slightly faster Sandisk Extreme pro SD card which equated to...
The R5 is an outstanding camera and light years ahead of the 7D2 but it won't bring anything to the table for you with regards to actual or perceived reach compared to the 7D2 that you already use, particularly as you say, you crop heavily with the 7D2.
The crop mode on the R5 is not a...
It would be even better if there was something like a 200 - 600 in the mix too. The lenses will be simply the best and no doubt priced accordingly when they arrive. In the meantime EF L glass lenses are not too shabby.
For bird photography the only reason you would opt for an R6 over an R5 is Cost.
The additional cost of the R5 is significant and also includes extra storage, possible PC upgrade and CF Express costs.
I originally decided on an R6 but an unexpected windfall enabled an upgrade, which will arrive...
It's good to know that your Ok with the electronic shutter Pete.
I've never experienced one so don't really know what to expect, perhaps it's fixed at 20fps as a mitigation of rolling shutter effect, I don't know though!
I've already ordered the R5 and It's on order from a local retailer so the...
Thanks for the link Pete.
20fps and no control over it. Also a considerably long list of caveats when using electronic shutter.
Not a show stopper but as previously stated, mechanical shutter it will be (when I ever get my hands on it). Well mostly anyway.
Thanks for that Les.
It'll be mainly mechanical shutter for me then, which I believe is very quiet.
I could soon lose the will to live just trawling through one 3 or 4 second burst of frames taken at that rate.
Thanks for all the replies.
Poison isn't an option, I have a hedgehog in the garden as well as at least three cats that visit every night.
I've not seen them since but I'm permanently trail camming the garden and I would have thought they'd be after the hedgehog food but nothing as yet.
Thanks for the replies.
I was rather hoping that they were House mouse - mus musculus.
They are way too small for Rats but the thought that they're juveniles is still nagging away at me. Someone else that I've asked leans towards mice.
At the moment it's 2-1 for the rat. Grrr.
You may have answered your own question here Clive.
If it has to be Canon, which it does, the best choice for you is the 7D2 because it's the best that Canon have to offer for BIF that's in your price range.
Disregard any negative stuff that you have read, it's still a very capable piece of kit...
Do you have an option to borrow some mk3 convertors off a mate to try them?
It may be worth a try particularly with the pixel packed sensor of the 90D which also has a fairly basic af system.
Using a 90D + 500f4 mk1 + a 2X mk3 may require rock solid support + good conditions + good technique +...
What are the issues with the previous model convertors (mk2) ?
I had both 1.4x and 2x for many years and wasn't aware of any issues concerning IQ or AF when used with L glass.
In my opinion the Mk3 convertors are not particularly better optically but the 2x mk3 certainly performed better than...
