Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

Exactly. The bias towards seen-only records is odd. Your ears are working 100% of the time you’re not asleep. Assuming you don’t have a hearing issue or lack of acoustic knowledge there is zero reason aural records are less valid that visual ones. Most people are visually dominant but not...

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

That depends a little on which taxonomy you want to use. As a platform the interface and data output by ebird is far better - in terms of sample size, granularity of data and much more, (notwithstanding the fact it is only for birds).

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

Thanks for posting and doing so openly. I think a lot of the skepticism was down to you being totally off the radar. For example I was guiding 300+ days a year in Argentina at that point (and also In Venezuela) and some of the VZ birds especially seemed unlikely for a gringo wandering around on...

Aythya spp in Poland - Scaup/Tufted

Thanks both. i know from looking at tufted candidates here in NA there's variability in the plumage - eg extent of white blaze - but i see what you mean about the bill base. Interesting, thanks

Aythya spp in Poland - Scaup/Tufted

Friend just sent me this from Poland. Having been out of the Western Palearctic so long i couldnt give him a 100% answer. Are the circled birds scaup among the tufties? Do young female tufties show this much white at the bill base? I thought they can but now I'm not sure.... Thanks!

    Microphone for home-made field recorder

Found this overview: http://www.nemesisbird.com/bird-science/night-flight-call-primer/ and more details here for making your own: http://oldbird.org/mike_home.htm Its definitely something that can be cobbled together with a bit of experimenting. WIth this system you will collect sound from...

    Microphone for home-made field recorder

Somewhere there are instructions for building your own bucket mic. Would work well to collect the signal with the mic youre talking about as well as provide an easy way to protect from weather. i'll see if i can find them

    Microphone for home-made field recorder

I usean OldBird mic - http://oldbird.org/21c.htm - which has never had issues in the rain. Clingfilm round the mic capsule / parabola and then gauze over the top which is acoustically transparent but dissipates larger rain drops on impact. People leave these out for weeks in rain and theyre used...

Recording all day long: what to use?

These EM172 omni capsules (avail at micbooster in the UK http://micbooster.com/clippy-em172-microphones/99-xlr-stereo-clippy-em172-microphone.html) are good to position either on your body/head or on a tree / branch / hide roof if youre not moving long distances. They're very sensitive and reach...

    Marsh/Willow Tit

Marsh tit is fairly common in the Manifold Valley - around Ecton. Willow seems to be much scarcer here, but I've not been looking hard.

    Arizona puzzles

Nutcracker is correct on both counts. Immature Verdins are pretty unique looking - i've seen them confuse people regularly ;)

    Juvenile Savannah Hawk? Venezuala

Overnight call 22 August 2017, UK (audio).

Interesting sound. Seems low frequency for a bat but I don't have a better suggestion. Out of interest, what are you processing your recordings with, Raven Pro?

Zeiss Victory SF eye cups - popped off....

I love my Victory SFs. In fact both my Swaros are sitting on the shelf now mostly. But what's with the terrible eyecup thread. Mine popped off and I can see no way of getting it back without breaking it. There is no thread like on my Swaro ELs. See pic. Any ideas really appreciated! thanks

    Ring-billed x Lesser Black-backed gull hybrid? NY

i think this is well in range for LBBG, they not much larger than RBGU

    Gull Confirmation

It's a Kelp. Although I can see why you went for olrogs as there is barely any white in the primaries (which is a feature for olrogs). Did you see it in flight? - olrog's shows a neat black subterminal band (can't see the tail in your pic). The bill morphology is much better for kelp though...

    Possible Ring-billed x California Gull?

It's a RBGU for me, i think pic1 is just postural. It actually looks interesting in the flight shot though. Maybe see what people think in the NA Gulls group on FB?
