    Pipit vs Skylark

If you want a plumage feature, Skylark has a white trailing edge to the wing, visible in flight. The pipits don't.

Band-tailed Seedeater? Hard to see bill shape at that angle, but think too stubby for Band-tailed Sierra Finch?

    Cisticola problems, Zambia

Re behaviour, I've certainly seen Rattling on the ground as well as up in trees, so I wouldn't go too much on that. I'm not saying they're definitely Rattling though!

    Cisticola problems, Zambia

I can't rule out Rattling for either of them. What are the options at the location?

New Family in IOC : Salpornithidae

The Indian one used to be pretty reliable in one corner of the botanic gardens in Jaipur, though I had to wait for a few hours to score. Maybe it still is?

    England next April

If Scitland ends up happening, the Strejneger's Scoter will probably still be around if the OP is after that one too

    England next April

I can very much empathise with you here, because in many ways your trip mirrors a road trip I undertook in April this year to the Eastern USA with non-birding family, so I wish you the very best of luck. I had a fair few more targets though (34) and 4 rather than 3 weeks, but a bigger area to...

    Near misses on bird trips

I was in a bus crash in Ecuador where people died. The brakes failed and it rolled onto its roof. I was battered but managed to go birding the next day.

What's the sickest/drunkest/sleepiest etc you insisted on going out birding?

I guess the ultimate is to insist on going out birding after you're dead. You could do a deal with the other birders on your patch, so that when one of you is too dead to physically take yourself out birding, the others could dig you up and drag you down to your local patch if a patch tick turns...

I believe this is a great tailed grackle

It's a Jay. Great-tailed Grackles don't occur in Europe, they live in America. Last year there was (famously) a single Great-tailed Grackle that turned up in Pembrokeshire, presumably having arrived on a boat. It's something that had never happened before. It stuck around for a while. Since...

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Does anyone have access to a draft of version 15.2 so we can work out what we can resplit and relump, and get a bit of practice in of what we'll be calling them for a bit? 😃

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

All a bit of harmless fun. For me the biggest disappointments with this batch have been:- 1. The feeling of excited anticipation after seeing that Sri Lanka Shama had been split, and thinking "ooh great, surely I must have seen one of those and forgotten about it. White-rumped Shama's pretty...

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

I've seen both, so you can replace it with White-throated if you like. But I"m wondering if Kadavu Whistler was played originally, which was then lumped, and has now been split again but along with White-throated 😆? 🤔
