What is your FAVORITE bird ?

Cockatoos! You can't go past the combination of character, intelligence, size and looks. It is picking one which is difficult! Either the beautiful Major-Mitchell Cockatoo - one of my favourite birding memories is watching the pink toos at sunset flying over red dirt (Western QLD), the Gang-gang...

Budgerigar plague photos in W QLD, Australia

yep, definitely not a plague! They are arid inland birds and highly nomadic, and I haven't heard of them causing any significant crop loss. Their numbers are regulated by rainfall, and besides, they were there first...! It was a highlight of a recent trip to Bowra, western QLD, to see budgies...

Which Bird do you Least Like?

Now that I don't understand - it wouldn't be coastal rainforest without the 'ping' of bell miners! (Although they are very aggressive to other birds) My two least favourite are the Currawong and the Indian miner. I work on a Fairy-wren sp., and the Currawongs are a constant nest predator...

    Finsch's Pygmy Parrot

Great notes! I found them extremely interesting. I'm surprised to read that you were regularly seeing the parrot in disturbed and secondary habitat, I have always thought of pygmy parrot spp. as being primary rainforest birds. I agree that these species would be extremely interesting...

Comment by 'Guest' in media 'The Christmas Season = Breeding Season!'

thanks so much guys :) i was going to add that the female is on the left, which you can tell from her red eye and the male's warty eyering, but it looks like everyone worked that out anyway! Merry Christmas everyone!!

The Christmas Season = Breeding Season!

My favourite thing about Christmas time is that its breeding 'silly' season (at least here in the Southern Hemisphere). This pair of galahs are part of the colony which bred in the gums over the back fence. Their recently fledged chicks have just begun to visit my garden as well.

    Field Guide for NZ?

I agree with Mark, I have a few NZ field guides, and I definately like the Robertson and Heather Hand Guide to the Birds of New Zealand the best. New Zealand is a fantastic place to travel and bird - although if you want to see natives, not exotics, it is definately best to spend a lot of time...

    Major Mitchell

The Major Mitchell is named after the explorer (of the same name :) ), who said it was the most beautiful bird he had ever seen...I've always been inclined to agree. Lucky you for seeing one - they are fairly rare! Kalbarri is definately on the edge of their range, but Forshaw still lists it...

    Bird points game

+105 for me for that round...so that leaves me on 3325 I guess. ...I didn't even know there were this many buntings seen/found in the UK - they are not exactly a bird we get in this part of the world!
