I'm not judging. I do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identification, national, social or ethnic origin, age, marital status, military or veteran status, disability, pregnancy, union membership, political affliation, alpha brand preference...

    BN 8x32's back

Glad you still use your BNs and keep them in excellent condition. I imagine your teaspoon and vintage dolls are also minty, you should take them on Antiques Roadshow to find out how much they are worth. :) As to the BNs, you might get more than you paid for them...

    BN 8x32's back

Leica owners often talk about the view being "warm," such as Mac above, which usually refers to a peak in transmission in the red, as was the case in the Nikon SEs, Nikon E2s before 2017 E2, which now have flatter spectrums like the Nikon EDG. The graph, which shows the 8x32 UV peaking in the...

Kevin, They look new. Do you use them regulary or keep them in your curio cabinet? Btw, not only does MiracleGro kill birds, but look what it did to my tree!

    BN 8x32's back

I've read comments by other BN owners who say the same thing, that the BNs are close to the UVs optically, which suggests that Leica retained its characteristic warm color spectrum (bump in the red) from the BA/BN to the UV while increasing the overall transmission (see chart). I think this...

Have you tried the 8x32 Ultravid? Ergonomically the two models are different, the UV is smaller, lighter, and without the thick ribbed armoring. The focuser and diopter appear to be the same. But I wonder how they compare optically?

With that kind of luck, you should play the lottery in case lightning strikes twice.. These are total beauties. A great way to retire somewhere. :) Brock

Nikon Monarch HG 8x30 - worth or not to buy, considering prose n cons?

OTOH, male Ospreys and male Cardinals are devoted fathers who take care of their young. I saw the former on the PBS series "Wild Scandinavia," and the latter in my backyard. So, there is some balance to nature, though in birdworld, the biggest portion of the work raising their young still falls...

Nikon Monarch HG 8x30 - worth or not to buy, considering prose n cons?

Thanks! I thought it was a Hooded Mergasser hen, which I saw at a duck pond where I used to live but it was with the male, whose crest was much more striking than the female, which had a "duck tail" haircut like the Wood Duck. Looking at them side by side, I can clearly see the difference. The...

New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

As I mentioned in my post, the NL's focuser was a new design, not the traditional "two-tone stiction" non-greased focuser that Swaro made for decades. The CL's focuser is also new. But you say the focuser your EL is smooth in either direction. Is it an SV EL? I haven't tried the SV and have no...

Nikon Monarch HG 8x30 - worth or not to buy, considering prose n cons?

They are a good buy for the price, but the blurry edges bothered me since my eyes dart head into the blur when I panned with them. Having owned Nikon SEs, E2s, LXs, and EDGs, I'm used to sharp edges or at least gradual field curvature. The 8x32 M7 also had noticeable glare. As I recall, there...

New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

It sounds like the Terra ED. I couldnt rest my finger on the focuser without moving it. As to Swaro focusers, perhpas the CL or NL might work, but the 8x32 EL (pre-SV) had a focuser that turned fast to the left and hard and notchy to the right. So was the 8.5x EL I tried. The SLC's focusers were...

New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

Brunton made them. Brunton 8.5x43 or 10.5x43 Epoch binoculars. Not sure why they never caught on. Thought they looked cool, too. As I recall, the FOV was narrow, but that was on the first version, the v.2 had a better but barely wide by today's standards, 7.2* FOV. B&H had them specked with a...

New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

I have more expensive binoculars, but my "Go To" birding bins are $200 8x32 Cabela Guides, which were MIJ by Kamakura. The discerning eye will notice that the Nikon 8x32 EDG is sharper, has better edges, better CA control, better flare control, and a better focuser than the Cabela Guide but it's...

New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

Z, I also appreciate a fast (but not Terra/Conquest too fast) focuser. I was at Fisherman's Paradise yesterday, and I saw sandpipers, a Merganser hen with her ducklings, Mother Goose, who I've been watching and taking photos of for weeks as she lay on her next, with her newly hatched goslings...

New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

My 8x30 E2 has an 8.8* FOV. I haven't seen chromatic aberration of the exit pupil, and I'm not sure I want to look for it since once I see it, I may not be ablel to stop seeing it!

New Zeiss binos 8x40 SFL and 10x40 SFL

Surprisingly, I have never seen this phenomenon, but I do see CA, rolling ball, mustache distortion, pincushion, AMD, astigmatism, field curvature, veiling glare, and just about any other distortion/aberration possible with binoculars. I am spared from spherical aberration of the exit pupil in...

why do the 8x50 and 10x50 Ultravid have the same FOV?

Yes, more complex formula requiring ciphering with tangents and co-tangents, which takes into consideration the amount of pincushion or AMD, there was a thread on this recently. But if you look through two bins, you don't need a Texas Instruments calculator to tell which one has the wider...

Nikon Monarch HG 8x30 - worth or not to buy, considering prose n cons?

You're right! And that's the reason that "secret sauce" is what's missing from reviews and discussions of binoculars. Dennis mentioned 'image blackouts," which is another issue that might affect one person but not another. Same with CA, "rolling ball," eyecup/face fit, AFOV, etc. Tobias Mennle...

Nikon Monarch HG 8x30 - worth or not to buy, considering prose n cons?

That's what I always found lacking in every reviewer's evaluations--no category/points for "fun factor!" :) It sounds like ergonomics are at least part of what makes using binoculars fun. I can relate. Great optics are no fun if you can't hold the binoculars comfortably. Having said that, I...
