Roberts - Birds of the Kruger National Park (updated)

We feel the same way about getting books sent to us in South Africa. Often we are paying Amazon more for postage than for the book.

    Help with sunbird ID

It doesn’t look like a Marico. I searched for Shelley’s but never found one. I need to go back. I think you got lucky - awesome!

Do you count heard only birds on your life list?

I add very few “heard only” to my list. Recently I have heard of very dubious methods of seeing some African flufftails. If I’ve heard the species well, spent a good amount of time trying to locate the species ethically but not had success, I do occasionally put it on my lifelist. Using extreme...

bird call ID eastern lowveld of South Africa

I would appreciate help with the ID of this bird call. Calling in Klaserie reserve East of Hoedspruit. Called in summer along dry river bed at night. We heard it calling 5 or 6 nights over a 3 month period. We haven’t heard it call in previous years.

How much time to spend in Kruger National Park?

Have a lovely trip. I love this time of year. We are off to Indonesia and Thailand so will sadly miss the best of it.

How much time to spend in Kruger National Park?

Kruger is hot. This year is forecast to be hotter and drier from now to Nov. We have temps of 38 forecast for this week and it’s August. You may not need the AC every day, but some days you will be glad you have it. Having said that our house is solar and there isn’t enough battery to run the AC...

How much time to spend in Kruger National Park?

AC definitely better. We live in a wilderness area that is part of Kruger and temps of 40 are becoming more common. The ventilation at night in the cottages doesn’t allow them to cool. AC will be a life saver. Kruger in summer without AC can be a challenge

How much time to spend in Kruger National Park?

SA Birders Gen is a great FB page if you are looking to find some of the very localised endemics.

How much time to spend in Kruger National Park?

Have a look at Papkuilsfontein for flowers. Amazing. We were there in October a few years ago. The tourists had left but the flowers were still wonderful. Not the big monocultures but so many different species flowering. You could look at where the longer birding tours go and you could follow...

Finland, Lapland & Varanger May 2024

Thanks very much. We were wondering if we should do the same. We have booked the igloo going north already. I think we will book coming south now too as we don’t seem to have found another place that appeals to us

How much time to spend in Kruger National Park?

For flowers (not fynbos) it’s lovely to go up Mariepskop, if it’s the right season. Outside Kruger Park, near Orpen Gate. Lots of special flowers there and a lovely patch of forest. You could do the South of Kruger, come out or night and then go back in. If you have 4x4 it’s possible and not...

How much time to spend in Kruger National Park?

Yes, 3 weeks is enough time for Kruger. You will see a great number of birds (November is best). Good places to stop on the way of other birds would be Nylsvei area (3 nights), Polokwane Game Reserve (1 day) and Woodbush (3 nights) near Haenertsburg. All those have camping near by.

    First Kenya solo birding trip in Feb. 24;

It’s a long drive to Samburu. Almost a whole day each way. For such a short trip I don’t think it’s worth it. Drive times in Kenya are slow because of the traffic. Just visit the other 4 areas. And try to avoid the Naivasha road on a Sunday afternoon, probably not a good idea on a Friday...

Southern Africa Trip - Looking for input

After seeing this trip as part of your Kruger trip and your total trip is 5-6 weeks, I wouldn’t recommend 3 weeks in Kruger if you are going to all these places. It’s quite a lot of km for 6 weeks birding. You would probably be best limiting Kruger to a few days based on what species are you...

You will have an amazing time spending 3 weeks there.

How much time to spend in Kruger National Park?

In November it is hot but birding is best. I think 2-3 weeks in Kruger would be fun, but if you want to zoom through - 5 days I guess. The north has the largest species diversity of birds, but you really need to go all the way from north to south. 10 days will give you good birding and good...

    Capercaillie in Finland

Hi, we are very keen to see Capercaillie on our visit to Finland. We will be travelling from Narvik, to Luleä, Rovaniemi and then Kuusamo in March, early April, sadly before the lekking season. Does anyone have contact details of someone that may be able to give us info that will help us locate...

Birdwatching in Finland - Rovaniemi area

Thanks. Great to know the road to Varanger is fine in March. Hopefully I can find some info on the Tromso section. Thanks for the food heads up. We have already booked our Tromso section so have to start there. Fitting in a visa application between Tromso and our 3 month Indonesia- Thailand...
