    Birding on EastEnders

European Bee-eaters on Postman Pat was one of my fave out-of-place background recordings. There are at least epsiodes where bee-eaters can clearly be heard. Not your typical day to day Welsh bird. Common Swifts have even featured on films set in a snowy landscape (they coudl be genuine, maybe it...

Golden Eagle Attacking People in Norway

An The general concensus according to the Norwegian press is that experts have concluded that this particular golden eagle (singular - there was only one) was used to contact with humans, and seeked human company and was not preying on people. For some reason the sensationalist press bureaus...

Transporting the scope in a backpack

Keep the eyepiece attached. It will save getting dust and moisture etc. inside the telescope when you reattach or detach the eyepiece. Personally never seen anyone removing the eyepiece before transporting in a backpack. It pays to have the scope ready for use ;) 🔭

Swedish Government issues licenses to cull around 20% of remaining brown bear population

Quote from piece in The Guardian regarding police presence during the Swedisg bear hunt "We have deemed it necessary to ensure that there is no interference with the hunters doing their job during this year’s bear hunt". Hunters doing "their job"? I thought this was a recreational pursuit, but...

Shannon Estuary, Ireland (June) - common whimbrel?

Whimbrel or curlew? Bill too long for whimbrel, looks good for Eurasian curlew. Godwit: Jizz suggests long-legged and long-billed waders. I just think they are not bar-tails. and in my opinion the godwits are black-tailed. SW

Grey-headed Lapwing. BTW, nice to see a field sketch, and to know that not everyone relies on a photo to illustrate their observation. SW

    New Conquest models coming ?

I sat my gear behind a car as I searched for something in my pockets. Someone started the car and reversed over my binocs. I shouted that my binocs had been run over, so the driver then drove forwards, thereby running over them for a second time. They survived with no marks at all. Seem to...

Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

But how do we, the consumers, know whether or not we are getting a pair of binoculars with new or old formula armour?? Does it state on the box the 52 NL Pures come in that it is now with "new and improved armour"? If what you say is true that all new binocs will now have new armouring, then I...

New way to determine the weight of binoculars?

The armour is self-peeling, so the customer can weigh the binoculars when new, and then again after two years of use ;)

    Disappointed OM-1 mk2 100-400mm

I have the OM-1 and have until recently used this with the 100-400mm. Not the best lens, but I have taken some mega photos using this combination. Not sure how you have set up your camera, but I would avoid using the P setting. Better to use M, A or S. I wouldn't try and use a teleconverter with...

    Radio tagged White-tailed Eagle

Fair point. I am sure they want records of Isle of Wight birds wherever they are seen, and maybe they need to reword the text accordingly. And I am sure that they won't mind if they recieve records of Scottish WTEs, but they can forward the records to other projects.

    Radio tagged White-tailed Eagle

Jumping the gun a bit. The OP has not yet received a reply as to where the bird was tagged, nor where it has been seen. And to clarify things, the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation is not just the eminent Mr. Dennis himself, but a whole team of dedicated staff, so the use of "he" in these replies...

Tripod, fluid head, and scope in the rain.

A word of advice about stay-on-scope cases. If they get really spoaking wet then take them off to dry separately from the scope itself. These are rarely completely waterproof, and often get soggy. I sold all my stay-on-scope cases, prefering to dry off the armour of my scopes with a cloth after...

Is Slimbridge wetlands the Mecca of bird spotting in the Uk?😄

More or less nothing (wild) in the summer?? Take it you haven't been to Slimbridge in summer? I have been loads of times, most often in summer. Some of my best birding moments have been when visiting in summer. Plenty to see, especially in the wild areas. Don't agree with the statement that the...

Not sure if this is a Chiffchaff ???

Thanks Richard, I got confused by the term steps. As a ringer, I have seen more emarginations in 40+ years of birding than I have had hot dinners. Just never called them steps before. Doh!

    Yet another bridge camera thread...

I have owned both the Sony DSC-HX400V and the Panasonic Lumix FZ330. The Sony had the advantage of better reach. But overall the results from the Panasonic were much better. In particular, cropped photos were better from the Panasonic compared to the Sony. I have sold both, but as I recall the...

    Nikon HG 8x30 dissection

They were not built light just for the geriatric crowd. But also for people like me who carry a ton of gear and can bearly manage another gram. I am far from being a geriatric (a mere 60 y.o.) and have a scope, tripod, two cameras, 3-4 lenses, food, drink, GPS, phone, spare clothing, survival...

    Nikon HG 8x30 dissection

I just measured mine, and the length is 12 cm (centimetres) and not 12 mm (millimetres) ;) Great binoculars, no complaints other than that the focusser is stiffer than I would like. Top optics in their price class!
