A one generation hobby…and a concern for the future

I've just spent an enjoyable week at Flamborough. One of the things that really, really struck me was just how elderly the vast majority of birders were - I'd say easily 60% were in their 70s. Absolutely not a judgement from me, just an observation. I had exactly the same thought that someone...

    Bird song, northern Morocco

I think it might be a Goldfinch calling, rather than singing.

    Wheatear Question- Tajikistan 9/11/2024

I would think the habitat is very atypical for a Desert Wheatear, even a migrant. πŸ€”

Batumi - Boots on the Ground 6th to 28th September.....

Enjoying your reports. In case you go to the Botty Gardens again, here's where I had Krupers - basically the far (NE) end. https://maps.app.goo.gl/GvStP7ZKSmGm7Uag8

    Renting telescope Galway?

IMHO there's practically 0 chance I'm afraid. Those dates, there'll be a few birders on the Arans, more so on Inishbofin though. Enjoy your trip.

Five seabirds added to UK red list

A bit more detail. May look for further info too. Arctic Skua down 66%, and Common Gull 49% which I wasn't expecting. Interesting point that this data was BEFORE 2 years of bird flu.. πŸ€” https://www.rspb.org.uk/whats-happening/news/seabirds-count

Five seabirds added to UK red list

Funnily enough - and this may be coincidental - but I noticed recently how few I've seen here in N Wales. I saw one single a few days ago and was surprised. The Spring passage also seemed less than usual. As I say, not a scientific sample by any means. πŸ€”πŸ€ž

Birdwatching sites in Liverpool or Manchester

Hiya, I think Hoylake would be a good option. There's quite a bit of info about the area here on Birdforum if u do a keyword search, J. Turner in particular has written a lot. It's a cool area which I don't get to visit these days as much as I'd like to. There can be huge numbers of gulls and...

Birdwatching sites in Liverpool or Manchester

Hi Daniel, there's a few places to choose from in both areas depending on your preferences. Presumably, being Czech, you've seen most UK birds and are interested in things like Purple Sandpiper, Turnstone, Grey Plover, Sanderling, Knot, etc etc as u mention gulls and waders. Will you be hiring a...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

For N Wales I think it was about what was expected; folks at Rhos Point got up to 7-8 each for an estimated total of 20. I tried Great Orme for a change and had 0 Leachs but a feeding Stormy and a juv Sabs, with a Black Tern yesterday evening - to be fair all rarer for me in N Wales than Leachs...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

For me, based in N Wales but originally from Cheshire - I'd be at the coast tomoz no question at all. Strong winds for the last 24 - 48 hrs from the right direction; then swinging round to have a NW element is fairly textbook. I'd be surprised if anyone in the usual locations doesn't have a...

    Eurasian blackbird??

Yes, in the field, the chances of being unable to decide between Blackbird and WBW are tiny enough not to worry about. πŸ™‚πŸ‘πŸŒ³πŸ¦ Would love to see a WBW, been ages.. 🀞🀞

Yes it's just light reflecting on the feathers, which is why the tail seems pale too.

    Ghost orchid appeal

I live in N Wales, it's been mostly cold and wet. Biggest amount of time between rain, prob a week and a half tops. Currently in Suffolk and I'm told it's been dry for a few weeks, til last night. Different world really. Sounds like sour grapes to me?.. πŸ€”πŸ§πŸ€·

    First birdsong!

A new "thing" for me a couple of days ago - a Great Spot Woody drumming, post-breeding.. πŸ€” Heard it Mon & Tue mornings in north Cheshire. There were Coal and Great Tits singing too, but that's a bit more expected. As Martin Garner used to say - always learning. πŸ™‚πŸ‘πŸ¦

    Stithians reservoir

It depends which part you want to access. There's 2 causeways at the north and south end, tho I understand the Black Duck is no longer on offer from the Golden Lion. There used to be a hide, accessed from the southern causeway, tho I'm afraid I haven't been for a very long time. Dantheman is...

    First birdsong!

Yes cracking things to be fair. Can still remember the first time I really listened to one as a kid in my mate's back garden prior to some footy, y'know, jumpers for goalposts.

    Honey Buzzard? Poland

That may be, but fortunately it's irrelevant as you're extremely unlikely to just see the "pointed hand" of a BOP, without also seeing the rest of the wing, or even the rest of the bird, or getting an impression of size, shape and behaviour, or hearing the call, or flight action, or seasonality. πŸ™‚πŸ‘
