Worst thing to happen to you when Birding?

6 of us went out to the Gambia in 1984 & the 700 tonne boat did capsize, 4 people drowned out of 90 people on board but 3 of them were our group from Coventry but only 2 bodies were recovered in Crocodile infested waters. We did spend 6 hours on the upturned hull of the boat till we were...

Birding Morocco (safety and other questions)

When we landed at Tangiers 11pm, we picked up the Hire car which was empty so by the time we left the Airport around midnight we went looking for a Petrol station, we got ripped off for Petol as we had to use Sterling as we could not get any local currency before we entered the country. As there...

Birding Morocco (safety and other questions)

A week in Morocco in March 93 was nothing but trouble from the moment we landed, the worst place been Merja Zerga for the S B Curlews. Taking on Hassan as a guide we arrived at the Marshes & around 50 Men & youths surrounded us & Hassan told us to pay them to guard our car otherwise they would...

    World Yearlist Record Attempt

So after a big year & you do another year birding round the world but not species seen in your big year how many new species could you see '1000, 1500 or 2000. Obviously it would cost a lot more as you would have to Island hop for endemics but it could put you in the top World listing rankings...

100000 Woodcock shot every year in the UK

I think in mid Warwickshire Woodcock has gone as a breeding bird, in recent years I have surveyed woods where I used to get them roding but not any more. In winter in woods with limited access to Dogs & Mountain Bikes I can see half a dozen birds or even into double figures in a couple of hours...

    Sow Thistle

This was my thought, I saw Marsh Sow-thistle in Norfolk last year at Holme when I was working on the sea defences & a few weeks ago at Strumpshaw Fen on the way back from the Great Knot. There were about 30 plants when I first noticed them on Wednesday driving by, on Thursday I had a quick look...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Warwickshire

Should have been mega alerted on my pager, far better than all those Pied-billed Grebes they mega'd in Ireland the other year, but not to uncommon in North Warks or for that matter most other species on the British List have been recorded in the area. Mike.

    Norfolk birding

Typical, if it hadn't been a Bank Holiday I would have been working in those road works & all I've had there is a Nightingale & Lesser Whitethroat, back there tomorrow to supervise some Newt fencing going in & a nesting bird survey & I will be stuck in those road works as well on the way there &...

    Hedge Flailing

The problem these days is flail instead of laying, for a lot of farmers hedges are just a pain, while surveying large areas of Warwickshire the most common code I wrote down for hedges was 'J22' which stood for Defunct Hedge meaning poorly maintained & gappy (ie not creating a corridor for...

I will certainly be taking up that offer as soon as I get some pennies off customers, I subscribed to BB from 84-89 then BW came out & I couldn't afford them both so BW it was as it was upto date news & not historical as in BB in the eighties. Mike.
