This will be a bird ringed at Belvide in June last year. Colin is away at the moment but will give you the exact details when he gets back. Cheers Steve

Hi all, Interesting to see your Caspian Gull paid Belvide a visit yesterday afternoon. The distinctive open grey inner primary window on the right wing can be seen in the photo, compared to the more classic venetian blind effect on the left wing. I've used Pete Lewis's image taken 22nd January...

Hi Phil, it is the same bird. I think the opinion is that it is a Caspian Gull even though the greater covert pattern appears to be an anomaly on what I was taught to look for. When I first viewed the photos, it was this reason for me labeling it as a hybrid. Talking to some very respected Gull...

Hi Chaps. Your 1st winter gull would appear to be a Caspian x Herring Gull hybrid. Probably from the mixed German colonies. Hughie King had reservations about this bird and asked for my opinion. The chequered greater covert pattern and streaky flanks rule out a pure Caspian, but it does have a...

The last Hawfinch I saw there was in 1995. I remember seeing up to 54 there in the winter of 88/89. I checked it a few weeks ago with no luck, but there were still plenty of leaves on the trees. I'm pretty confident there will be Hawfinch there some time this winter. If not, March will be a good...

Can I see a brown line between the upper flanks and mantle indicating a 1st winter bird? Please ignore me if this is just an effect in the photo. Cheers Steve

Hi Neal, your birds appear to be Greylag x Canada hybrids and certainly not Brents. Cheers Steve

Hi all, It looks ok for a Yellow-legged Gull to me. The bird is still in active wing moult so the pattern on the underside of the primaries isn't much help. This bird looks like one of the typical atlantic types with a slight streaky area around the eyes and head and also a slightly paler...

Hi all, a very enjoyable couple of hours at your reserve this morning and my first for 20 years!! A reserve to be proud of. Incidentally, we saw a juvenile Avocet around 11ish which looked very wonky on it's legs. Is this another sick bird to the one that was reported dead? Cheers Steve

12th November would be better for me. The Baggies are at home to Burnley on the 19th being a season ticket holder. Cheers Steve

Belvide would be up for it. Wouldn't a date in November be a more productive time? Cheers Steve

Hi all, Despite Belvide having larger numbers of Ruddy Duck, I could never remember us having a large breeding population. The peak numbers at Belvide were usually in March and again in August/September. The breeding population was much smaller with 5-8 pairs in 1980/81 being the most. During...

Hi wheatearlp, It doesn't need to be. In Staffs it gets sent to the main chaps from the main reserves, eg me at Belvide, GJM and Rog Broadbent at Blithfield and so on. I guess Phil Andrews or John Belsey would cover the Upton records. Cheers Steve

Hi all, with regards to the above, the Staffs county recorder sends a draft copy of the report to all the relevant people to check for any mistakes, before sending it in for printing. Cheers Steve

Hi Phil, don't forget Graham Mant has the same for Blithfield. Eric Clare must be up there too. Would have thought John Judge has a pretty decent Draycote list. I still haven't seen Bearded Tit (last record 1986) or Black Throated Diver (last record 1988) at Belvide. Cheers Steve

Hi Phil LOL There's hardly any waders about to scare off anyway. Just 1 Ringed Plover, 1 LRP and 7 Common Sandpiper at Belvide today. I think we're up a certain creek without a paddle regarding our passage waders these days. I hope I'm wrong, but there's been a steady decline for several years...

Hi Phil, I was talking to John Belsey last week suggesting that the last week in August would have better potential. Departing summer migrants are easier to come by and wader passage should be ok. I'm happy to go with the flow, just my thoughts and appreciate some might not be able to make that...

Hi Phil, I was talking to John Higginson the other day and he was saying an effective way to control Phraggy is to wait for the new growth and then cut it below the water level. He says this should kill the plant. This is of course if your area of phraggy is growing in water. Cheers Steve
